Auftakt ist das jährlich stattfindende Herzstück der nGbK: Darin werden für das kommende Jahr die thematischen Weichen neu gelegt und die Projekteinreichungen vorgestellt – diesmal 27 Vorschläge. Über diese stimmt der Verein intern ab und sie werden das Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsprogramm der nGbK 2023 ausmachen.

Mittels der basisdemokratischen Struktur und dem niedrigschwelligen Zugang will der Verein eine Weiterentwicklung von kuratorischen Formaten und thematischen Setzungen im Kunstfeld ermöglichen. Dabei ist die Arbeit in einem Kunstverein heute neuen Anforderungen ausgesetzt. Welche Rolle spielt die Kunst in einer immer komplexer werdenden Dauereskalation der Gesellschaft? Wie kann Gemeinschaft in einem Kunstverein erlebt und sichtbar gemacht werden?

Der diesjährige Auftakt bildet die letzte Präsentation in den Ausstellungsräumen in der Oranienstraße, bevor die nGbK voraussichtlich im Sommer 2023 ihren neuen Zwischenstandort in der Karl-Liebknecht-Straße beziehen wird. Auch ist die nGbK parallel in einem Zustand der institutionellen Transformation, da sie aktuell in den Berliner Landeshaushalt überführt wird und dadurch in Zukunft über eine regelmäßige, öffentliche Förderung verfügt.

Der Spagat zwischen Selbstorganisation, Vereinssatzung und institutionellen Vorgaben ist neben dem Anliegen zu mehr Diversität und der klimaneutralen Weiterentwicklung die große anstehende Herausforderung an die nGbK als Kunstverein.

Prelude is the heart of the nGbK’s annual program: in it, the thematic course is set anew for the coming year and the project submissions are presented – this time 27 proposals. The association votes on these internally and they will make up the exhibition and event program of the nGbK 2023.

By means of the grassroots democratic structure and the low-threshold access, the association wants to enable a further development of curatorial formats and thematic settings in the art field. In doing so, the work in an art association today is exposed to new demands. What role does art play in an increasingly complex permanent escalation of society? How can community be experienced and made visible in an art association?

This year’s Prelude will be the last presentation in the exhibition spaces on Oranienstraße before the nGbK is expected to move into its new interim location on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße in the summer of 2023. In parallel, the nGbK is also in a state of institutional transformation, as it is currently being transferred to the Berlin state budget and will thus have regular public funding in the future.

The balancing act between self-organization, association statutes, and institutional requirements is, in addition to the concern for more diversity and climate-neutral further development, the great upcoming challenge for the nGbK as an art association.
