Ein Gespräch zwischen Noa K. Ha und Giovanni Picker, moderiert von Niloufar Tajeri

In ihrem kürzlich erschienenen Buch European cities: Modernity, race and colonialism unterziehen die beiden Stadtforscher_innen Noa K. Ha und Giovanni Picker gemeinsam mit dreizehn weiteren Beitragenden das Projekt einer europäischen urbanen Moderne einer kritischen Neubewertung. Dabei identifizieren sie eurozentrische und historizistische Perspektiven auf die europäische Stadt des 21. Jahrhunderts, die nicht zuletzt in Berlin-Mitte zu beobachten sind, etwa in aktuellen Debatten um das Humboldt-Forum oder die Entwicklung des Molkenmarkt-Quartiers.

Auch die nGbK, die 2023 ihre neuen Räume unweit dieser beiden Orte beziehen wird, bleibt von solchen Debatten nicht unberührt. In ihrer nGbK-Lecture machen Ha und Picker im Gespräch mit Niloufar Tajeri deutlich, wie sehr die Entwicklung der Mitte Berlins nicht nur von wirtschaftlichen und politischen Interessen geprägt ist, sondern auch von Kämpfen um kulturelle Hegemonie. Den in stadtplanerischen Diskursen immer häufiger zu beobachtenden positiven Rückbezug auf eine idealisierte Vergangenheit diskutieren sie vor dem Hintergrund der Geschichte Berlins: Von kolonialem Erbe über die Enteignung von Jüdinnen und Juden bis hin zur Teilung der Stadt. In der Einleitung ihres Sammelbands entlarven Ha und Picker mithilfe postkolonialer, dekolonialer und Critical-Race-Theorien das Modell der europäischen Stadt als ein eurozentristisches und plädieren für einen Perspektivwechsel.


Klassenfragen – Kunst und ihre Produktionsbedingungen

Im Arbeitsfeld Kunst treffen extreme Klassenunterschiede aufeinander. Armut und soziale Herkunft werden meist verschwiegen – oder fetischisiert. Die Lebensrealitäten von Künstler_innen werden dabei stark von jenen nicht glamourösen, nicht öffentlichen Seiten des Kunstbetriebs bestimmt: Von prekären Produktionsbedingungen und finanziellen Abhängigkeiten. Das Ausstellungsprojekt untersucht diese komplexen Beziehungen und die sich daraus ergebenden Widersprüche – sowohl in der Auswahl der gezeigten künstlerischen Arbeiten als auch in einem diskursiven Begleitprogramm. Das Projekt ist eine Kooperation zwischen der nGbK und der Berlinischen Galerie.

Mit dem Projekt re-existencia Hellersdorf erprobt das Kollektiv rampe:aktion die Übersetzbarkeit von Konzepten und Praktiken urbaner Widerständigkeit aus dem lateinamerikanischen Raum in der urbanen Peripherie Berlins. Das Projekt entsteht im Anschluss und als Fortführung einer Workshop-Reihe, die – von Carolina Pinzón Rivera und Christian Diaz Orejarena initiiert – Anfang 2022 in Kolumbien stattgefunden hat. Diese Aktivitäten und die dort entstandenen Filmaufnahmen waren Ausgangspunkt für experimentelle Filmaktionen in der Umgebung der station urbaner kulturen/nGbK Hellersdorf und mit der Nachbar_innenschaft während einer Woche im September 2022. Die Gruppe lädt nun zu einer kleinen Präsentation ein, bei der sie Einblicke in den Prozess gibt und eine Auswahl an Material-Experimenten zeigt. 


X Properties – Zur De-/Finanzialisierung der Stadt
Das Veranstaltungsprojekt X Properties verhandelt die Wirkmacht des Finanzkapitals auf die soziale und kulturelle Produktion von Stadt, auf ihre Beziehungsweisen und Subjekte.

A discussion between Noa K. Ha and Giovanni Picker, moderated by Niloufar Tajeri

In their recently published book European cities: Modernity, race and colonialism, the editors, urbanists Noa K. Ha and Giovanni Picker, along with thirteen contributors, critically rethink European urban modernity, reviewing Eurocentric and historicist perspectives on 21st-century European cities. These perspectives seem to be evident not least in Berlin-Mitte, as well as in current debates surrounding the Humboldt-Forum and the development of the Molkenmarkt quarter.

The nGbK, which is due to move to its new premises close to these two locations in 2023, is affected by these debates. In their nGbK Lecture, in conversation with Niloufar Tajeri, Ha and Picker will highlight the degree to which the development of the district is not only shaped by capital and political interests, but also entangled in struggles over cultural hegemony. The positive references to an idealized past that are increasingly seen in city-planning discourse will be discussed against the backdrop of Berlin’s history: from the city’s colonial legacies to the expropriation of Jewish landlords during the Third Reich, and the East-West divide. In the introduction to their edited volume, with the help of postcolonial, decolonial, and critical race theories, Ha and Picker unmask the model of the European city as a Eurocentric one and argue for a shift of perspective.


Class Issues – Art production in and out of precarity

The job of being an artist is characterized by extreme class differences. Poverty and social background are usually either not mentioned or fetishized–or not mentioned at all. The lived reality of artists is defined by less glamourous, non-public sides of the art business—by precarious conditions of production and financial dependency. The exhibition project examines these complex interrelationships and the often resulting contradictions: both in the choice of works on show and in the accompanying program of discursive events. The project is a cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie, where the exhibition will be realized.

With the project re-existencia Hellersdorf, the collective rampe:aktion tests the translatability of concepts and practices of urban resistance from the Latin American region in the urban periphery of Berlin. The project emerges as a follow-up and continuation of a series of workshops that – initiated by Carolina Pinzón Rivera and Christian Diaz Orejarena – took place in Colombia in early 2022. These activities and the film recordings made there were the starting point for experimental film actions in the surroundings of the station urbaner kulturen/nGbK Hellersdorf and with the neighborhood during one week in September 2022.
The group now invites to an installative presentation, where they will give insights into the process and show a selection of material experiments. 


X Properties – on the de-/financialization of the city
The event program X Properties focuses on linkage of the financial and real estate sectors, their impact on local neighborhoods, and the global transformation of urban space.
